SKI RESORT Mountain Village, Colorado

I was commissioned to design a higher budget ski resort in Mountain Village, Colorado. The original name of the project was The Telluride Club.

My duties to the project included the grading plan, building design, creation of renderings and various scale models of the furniture and interior and exterior of the building, ski access planning, design of offsite sales building, full interior design and preliminary preparation of sales materials.

The project consists of fifty-two time share residences configured in several different ways: upper two bedroom units, lower two bedroom units and four bedroom penthouse units, all of which contain a one bedroom lock-off, which provides a separate entry door to one of the bedrooms so that it can be occupied separately. Lobby, public rooms, pool, ski access, and parking are also included in the project.

The site is only two acres and on a very steep slope. To create a grading plan that would allow for the 90,000 square foot building was, to say the least, challenging. One of the reasons I was awarded the commission was and is my expertise in finding site solutions where it seems that there are none.

I came up with a concept and grading plan for the site that successfully nestled the building into the hillside and allowed for all the units and public rooms. In order to accomplish this, I lowered the grade of the entire road that leads into the property. Fortunately, this was possible with Mountain Village.

Using a strategy that I often employ, I created a bridged entry into a very high vaulted ceiling lobby. I chose a European contemporary style for the building with a touch of the arts and crafts era. I used plenty of wood and the grand stone fireplace is the focal point of the lobby great room. I always prefer to place the grand room on an upper level, therefore affording the highest ceiling heights and the best possible views.

My focus for the residences was to create a cozy warm environment with plenty of wood, an open floor plan, with a large kitchen, a roomy five foot entry hall, a dining room that features a built in seat to conserve space, 9 ft. ceilings throughout and most importantly the large expanses of glass, bringing in the exceptional views.

I was inspired to specify Arts and Crafts Period furniture, as the clean lines very much complement the European contemporary feeling of the project and the surrounding mountains.

The founder of Mountain Village, Ron Allred, held a grand vision of a very high end European-style ski area with extraordinary architecture. Through multiple meetings with Ron Allred and the Design Review Board, I was inspired to create a unique and varied roof line with a contemporary arts and crafts feeling.

The exteriors sport a large percentage of stone as per requirements of Mountain Village, and the balcony areas display a variety of very interesting shapes. There is a tremendous mountain view from the site, and all the units as well as the important public rooms were afforded full mountain views via large expanses of glass.
