WELDON GAINER Malibu, California

This was the second project that I designed for Weldon Gainer. The first is also on the sand in Malibu and was much more extensive. I decided to show this one because the style is not represented elsewhere on this website.

Weldon purchased an existing structure. The small building had almost nothing to offer except the fact that it was already there. Building on the beach can be quite an undertaking with the overseeing agencies, including the coastal commission. Permitting a remodel is much easier. The most difficult problem would be the existing septic tank, which was taking up much of the land. The tank could not be relocated, per the regulations. I cantilevered the entry stairs over the septic area to provide more land use.

Little of the existing structure was used in the design that I produced, enough only to qualify as a renovation. There would be height restrictions. Standard ceiling heights and windows would be used. I however designed a mid level entry. This not only creates an easy climb to the second level, but provides an extra half story of height as one enters the main living areas. The garages would occupy most of the first story and the bedrooms, the third level.

Intricate details on the stucco window surrounds and the balcony and stair railings, give a Mediterranean feeling, as do the deep set windows. Roof decks and lots of glass take in the immediate ocean views. This is a beach house to be lived in, casual and inviting.
